EMPTY EYES - blown glass / installation
Lieve Van Stappen
Ghent, Belgium

This installation called "Empty Eyes" was set in the Camp Santo Chapel, Ghent, Belgium. Part of this exhibition were seven "christening dresses" made out of transparent blown glass. This exhibition was about the turn of the century and was to give a monument for those who deserved one and yet never got one.

While I was doing research for "Empty Eyes" mothers talked about their deceased baby, the grief and the dreams they had for it. They explained the love for a child that lived on in their memory: the eternal child, the ideal baby. These empty dresses have a dreamlike quality. They refer to angels.
